Grammy Award Winning Artist India.Arie has numerous hits and countless impactful ballads, but one that resonates with almost everyone, no matter who you are, has got to be “I Am Not My Hair.” The lyrics, the musicality, the melody, they all fit masterfully together to embody the sentiment everyone has (especially those in Black culture) about their hair. To remind you, let’s look back at the anthem. Akon lends his voice and the results are right here in the video. Watch below and let it take you back, but make sure to listen closely to the words.
Now fast forward to today, in 2019. With the hair revolution movement and the natural hair progression, the impact of this song can be seen now just walking down the street. Even flipping through magazines, the difference is noticeable. Now, Vogue, Elle, SELF and more actually cover Black women in their natural hair, something that was unheard of before. How did we get here? Well, it has a lot to do with the beautiful queen of it all, self-love included, India.Arie. She brought out the issues Black women and Black culture were experiencing behind closed doors and brought them to the light in an empowering self-love sort of way. She allowed those issues to be engulfed in love and pride, bringing them to the surface in a positive manner. Although “I Am Not My Hair” was released over ten years ago in 2006, it is still impacting people today more than ever.
Personally, India.Arie keeps this movement going through her own hair journey and discovery. She shares the beautiful transformations and realizations with her fans every single day — through her music, through her podcast, through her posts on social media and ultimately through her being, and the way she lives her life every single day.
Here, India.Arie shares her own hair journey in an Instagram post. Share in her experience and venture with her through her expedition, below.

Swipe Left: My hair journey this year: 1) is 18 months of growth from a flat low cut, i tried to trim my ends on NYE and messed it up 😆 2) The “tree braids” I had done for the Grammys no make up ~ it was 9 am when we finished lol (12hrs of braiding) 3) Grammy hair all picked out! 4) my first low hair cut in 22 months – these are my curls! 5) i went back 3 days later and got it ALL cut off ~ 6) back at a low cut ~ 7) and it feels good for now. CERTAINLY! I will grow it out again at some point lol … until then, I’m enjoying the BEST part of having low hair ~ the EXQUISITE pleasure of brushing my head hair and scalp! (at least 10times a day! Lol) 👉🏾 p.s. See my open letter link in my bio ✌🏾 #iamnotmyhair #iamlight #worthy #brownskin #songversation #songversationmedicine #grammy2018 #naturalhair #blackgirlmagic

This Baby Dancing To India Arie Will Absolutely Make Your Day!
One of the most flattering things for an artist is to have babies love your music. They haven’t been exposed to the press, the reviews, live performances, or any of the other things that could influence someone’s ability to like or dislike music. Instead, a baby only knows what makes them happy or sad. So when YouTube user jspille saw how her baby responded to India Arie’s music, she felt compelled to post it for the world to see.
She captioned the video with this,
My daughter likes to “dance.” She’s almost nine months old in this video and nothing gets her moving like India Arie! 🙂 enjoy
Wait until you see this sweet baby girl get to moving. She will absolutely make your day, as she has definitely made ours!
